Trinity Christian Cedar Hill Races to Title Win Over Regents

The Cedar Hill Trinity Christian Tigers captured their fifth state title, defeating Austin Regents 62-30.

HEWITT (December 8, 2017) – The Trinity Christian Cedar Hill Tigers reeled off 35 straight points in the first half to pave the way for the school’s fifth state title in a 62-30 win over Austin Regents.

The Tigers started the game with the ball only to fumble six plays into the game. Regents’ Ryan Clark recovered at the Tigers 39 and the Knights looked to be in business after a 26 yard pass from sophomore Wilson Long to junior Will Tyler Brydon. The drive stalled after a stuffed run and two incompletions so the Knights elected to try a field goal and took an early 3-0 lead after the 32-yard kick was good from senior Zach Robert.

Trinity responded with an 8-play drive, ending with a 10-yard scoring run by freshman quarterback Sheduer Sanders. The Tigers forced a punt and Regents looked to have an early advantage in the field position battle, downing the ball at the TCCH 9 yard line. Senior Maurice Washington took the first snap of the drive and ran 91 yards for a touchdown in a play that set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Washington finished the game with 262 yards rushing

The Tigers would score three more touchdowns, extending the first half lead to 35-3. A Regents drive ended at the TCCH 42 and Washington again took the first snap of the drive to the house for a 58-yard score. Camiron Smith would score on the next drive on a 51-yard reception.

The next Trinity drive was capped by a 4-yard TD reception from Sanders to junior Jalen Reed. Regents stopped the onslaught momentarily when Long connected with Robert for a 15-yard touchdown pass and headed to halftime down 35-10.

The second half was back and forth as Regents finally found some success on offense. The first three drives of the half ended in a Regents fumble, a Trinity turnover on downs, and a Regents punt. After Sanders connected with senior Erron Taylor on the third of his four passing touchdowns, the Knights’ Zach Robert scored again on a 69-yard reception from Long.

Seemingly unstoppable on offense, Trinity put together an 8-play drive that ended with a 6-yard TD run by Ja’Marvin Hartfield to extend the lead to 49-17. Regents then took 5 plays to find the endzone on a 10-yard pass to Cal Long, cutting the deficit to 49-23.

Sanders would connect on his final TD pass on the ensuing drive, a 23-yard catch and run by Hartfield. The extra point was missed and TCCH led 55-23. Wilson Long and Cal Long hooked up again on the next drive, this time a 21-yard scoring pass. A Robert extra point brought the Regents within 55-30.

Trinity took the ball with 5:43 remaining and ran five minutes off the clock before Washington powered in from the 1-yard line to give the Tigers the final 62-30 lead. Junior Zach Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards but the Knights could get no further than the Tiger 23 yard line before time expired.
