Luke 1:30 “And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.’ ”
“Favor with God.” Isn’t that what we desire? Mary was about to be blessed beyond her imaginable dreams. Yet, Gabriel’s first words were, “Do not be afraid.” Sight of an angel was reason for fright, but there was added reason for his assurance. Mary’s world was about to turn upside down. On the verge of marrying an honorable man, she will become pregnant out of wedlock. There were certainly moments of potential fear: What will Joseph do? What will my parents do? How will my friends and neighbors respond when they hear and see that I am pregnant…and not married? Fear may have turned to anger when told a 90 mile donkey ride and birth in a stable awaited her. Visits from shepherds and wise men would be assuring, but they would not prepare her to witness 33 years later the brutal death of her beloved son…the Son of God. As we seek favor with God, know that the road will include pot holes. Don’t be deterred, afraid or angry. Know that the Lord is walking with you. Look up to Him; draw in to Him; trust Him and await His favor.
Lord, thank You for helping us understand the emotions that must have run through Mary. Fill us with courage and assurance as we walk our road, seeking Your favor.
Do not be afraid today.
