Dallas Christian Tops Brook Hill in Extras
SWEENY – Dallas Christian earned an appearance in the TAPPS 4A finals by defeating Brook Hill 4-3 in eight innings on Thursday afternoon. The Chargers’ Anna Borgen was dominant at times, not surrendering a hit through the first four innings and striking out 13 in the game. The Chargers led 3-0 after four and a half innings, scoring two in the third inning and one in the fifth. Mirela Tornatore put the first run on the board after reaching on a bunt single, then scoring from first after an error in the Brook Hill outfield. Borgen, who reached on the error, scored on a double by Emily Garrett. In the fifth inning, Kennedy Barnett hit a bases loaded single to score Borgen to give Dallas Christian a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Brook Hill left fielder Adrianna Kuechle led off the frame with a double. Guard pitcher Kasey Anderson then tripled home Keuchle. Anderson would score on a ball that got away from the Dallas Christian catcher to cut the Chargers lead to 3-2. Dallas Christian would load the bases in the top of the sixth, but could not score. In the bottom of the sixth, Cassie Cannon reached on an error then advanced to second base on a passed ball. Taylor Schultz would drive in Cannon with a 2-out single to tie the game at 3.
In extra innings, the Chargers’ Lauren Ramos reached on a bunt single and advanced to third on a single by Borgen. Emily Garrett then singled home the winning run. Brook Hill threatened in the bottom of the eigth when Cassie Cannon reached third on an error. Borgen struck out the final two hitters to end the game, securing the Chargers’ 4-3 victory. Dallas Christian will face the winner of Fort Bend Christian versus Corpus Christi Incarnate Word in the TAPPS 4A finals.

Fort Bend Christian Rebounds to Win Over IWA
SWEENY – Fort Bend Christian overcame a 4-run first inning by Incarnate Word to punch their ticket to the TAPPS 4A state final, winning 7-4 in the semifinal matchup on Thursday afternoon. An uncharacteristic first inning by Tessa Cantrell saw the Angels send 9 batters to the plate, 6 of which batted before the Eagles recorded an out. After Amanda Spieghelhoff walked to start the game, Hayley Guerra and Mary Buhidar singled to score the first Angels run. Taylor Guzman and Kim Ramirez would also single, scoring Guerra and Buhidar to build a 3-0 lead. Maddie Thompson would walk to load the bases before Fort Bend Christian finally recorded an out with a strikeout of Milan Gazra. McKenzie McCoy reached on a fielders choice that scored Guzman, giving the Angels a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the first inning, Fort Bend Christian responded in a big way. After the first two hitters were retired, Kati Ray Brown and Claire McKissick drew walks before Danielle Sonnier connected on a 3-run home run to cut the IWA lead to 4-3. In the second inning, Cantrell settled and held the Angels scoreless. Cantrell would allow just one hit the rest of the way. The second inning saw the Eagles tie and take the lead. Grace Beecroft and Emily Ferguson singled before Kati Ray Brown tied the game with a RBI single. McKissick then tripled home Ferguson and Brown and scored on a wild throw to give the Eagles a 7-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Cantrell finished with 5 strikeouts, giving up 3 earned runs and just 4 hits. Taylor Guzman was in the circle for the Angels and took the loss, striking out 1 and allowing 6 earned runs.
Fort Bend Christian advances to face Dallas Christian on Friday in the TAPPS 4A state championship game.
