TAPPS 5A Ranked Volleyball Recap

We missed reporting in the TAPPS 6A recap that San Antonio Antonian College Preparatory volleyball coach Samantha McLure recorded her 400th career victory in winning the Round Rock Westwood Classic, courtesy of the San Antonio Express News’ Terrence Thomas.

Six of the top 10-ranked TAPPS 5A teams were at TAPPS’ second annual Spike Down Classic while Houston Lutheran South Academy, ranked 10th, was in action at the Adidas Texas Volleyball Invitational in Pearland. (These teams’ outcomes are covered in our posts on those tournaments.)

The remaining three teams – Midland Christian School, San Antonio Christian School and Victoria St. Joseph – were all in tournament action as well.

Fourth-ranked Midland Christian School opened its season Tuesday night with a three-set sweep over Trinity School of Midland, then finished third on Saturday at the 44th annual Monahans High School volleyball tournament.

Dropped to the Bronze bracket of the Columbus High School Tournament after losses to Devine and Goliad on Thursday and a split with Vanderbilt Industrial and Texas City on Friday, fifth-ranked Victoria St. Joseph won a pair of three-set matches over Fulshear (26-24, 20-25, 17-15) and East Bernard (20-25, 25-21, 15-11) to take its title on Saturday. The Lady Flyers exited the weekend 4-4 after splitting its dual with Port Lavaca Calhoun (3-0, W) and Industrial (3-1, L) on Tuesday.

After dropping a five-set (25-16, 19-25, 22-25, 25-14, 9-15) home opener against Blanco Tuesday night in Robin Gerlach’s San Antonio Christian School coaching debut, the Lions rolled through pool play of the Judson Wagner tournament on Friday with a trio of wins, but LSCSN is currently unable to ascertain SACS’ complete results from Saturday.

Unconfirmed reports had San Antonio Christian School losing in the championship game to Geronimo Navarro.

Gerlach’s first wins came after recording 719 victories at La Vernia, San Antonio Holmes, San Antonio Churchill, Seguin and New Braunfels.
