Six Texas Private School Volleyball Teams Earn AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 16, 2018) – An all-time high six Texas private and parochial high school volleyball programs were recognized today by The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for earning the organization’s AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2017-2018 season.

The Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) had four of those six teams including the girls programs at Episcopal High School in Bellaire, The Kinkaid School in Houston and St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Austin.

Dallas St. Mark’s School of Texas’ boys team earned the honor for the eighth consecutive year and are one of five boys programs nationally who have received this recognition eight or more consecutive years.

Tomball Concordia Lutheran and Temple Central Texas Christian School’s girls teams represented the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS).

It was the second straight year that the Lady Lions of CTCS have been chosen and the four new girls private and parochial high school programs being recognized brings the all-time total to 13.

Twenty-seven (27) other UIL Texas high school girls volleyball programs were also honored.

Oklahoma City (Okla.) Casady School boys volleyball team, which also competes in the SPC and was runnerup this past season to Dallas Greenhill School, was also selected.

All of the schools were part of a record-breaking number of 973 NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, two-year college, USCAA, collegiate men, college beach and boys and girls high school programs that earned this honor.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored.

Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while amassing a 619-team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award’s inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 973.

Dallas St. Mark’s School of Texas received special recognition on the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll by having one of the top five GPAs of the 28 boys volleyball programs that were selected.
