Braeden Barrett, Casey Wasserman, and Keyshawn Wyatt celebrate a 30-29 Grapevine Faith Christian win over Austin Regents in the TAPPS Division II State Championship.

In what Coach Kris Hogan called another crazy game, the Grapevine Faith Lions defeated Regents School of Austin 30-29 in double overtime Friday night in the TAPPS Division II State Championship. After trading scores in the first overtime, Faith had the ball first in the second overtime and scored a touchdown on a 4 yard run by Keyshawn Wyatt. With Faith leading 30-23, Regents got their turn in the second overtime and scored in 4 plays on a 2-yard run by junior Conner Allen. Faith and Regents would trade timeouts before the extra point try when Regents went for the win. The extra point attempt failed as Jace Franklin’s pass went over the head of Russell Hine, giving the Lions their first ever state football title.

The highly anticipated matchup between Regents and Grapevine Faith got off to a sloppy start as rain fell intermittently throughout the first half. The Faith Lions committed 6 penalties in the opening half and the normally disciplined Regents defense committed a roughing the passer infraction. Regents’ quarterback Jace Franklin threw two interceptions and the Knights had an extra point blocked and returned for 2 points. Franklin entered the game having thrown just 3 interceptions in 13 previous games.

The Knights struck first at the 3:51 mark in the first quarter. After a turnover on downs and interception in their first two drives, Regents hit paydirt on their third possession when Conner Allen scored on a 1-yard run that capped a 7-play drive, spanning 52 yards and just over 2 minutes. The extra point attempt was blocked and returned for 2 points by Faith’s Malik Caper. Down 6-2, the Faith Lions would punt on the ensuing drive and get an interception by Jake Mitchell on the very next play. Starting at the 35, Faith Christian would run 6 plays and score on a 9 yard pass from Deuce Hogan to Major Dykes to take a 9-6 lead to end the first quarter. Regents would tie the game on a field goal by Zach Robert at the 7:22 mark of the second quarter.

After halftime, both teams came out on fire offensively. Just two plays into the third quarter, star running back Keyshawn Wyatt left the game with an injury. The Lions came alive as Preston Steele filled in and accounted for 54 yards on the drive, ended by a 30-yard TD run to give Faith a 16-9 lead. Steele would finish the contest with 166 yard on 15 carries. Regents was not to be outdone. Jace Franklin then connected with Russell Hine for a 19-yard scoring strike, tying the game at 16. Regents would recover the ensuing kickoff and drive the field again only to have a busted field goal try intercepted by Malik Caper.

The next two possessions in the game resulted in interceptions. The first by Regents’ Danny Phillips and then Faith’s Jake Mitchell picked off a Conner Allen pass with just over 11 minutes left in regulation. The teams would trade possessions and Grapevine Faith took over with 6:53 remaining. Wyatt fumbled at the Regents 8 yard line with just under 6 minutes remaining where the Knights took over and drove to the Lions’ 22. With 10 seconds remaining, Conner Allen was stuffed at the Faith 23 on 4th down, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime, Regents started off the period with a holding penalty. From the 35 yard line, Jace Franklin hit Russell Hine over the middle where Hine fumbled at the goal line. Cooper Christian recovered in the endzone for the score. Faith would then score in 4 plays on a 32 yard scoring strike on 4th down and 17. Freshman Deuce Hogan connected with Jake Mitchell to force the second OT.
