Fort Worth Christian used their strong running game to defeat Austin Regents 41-30 in the TAPPS regional final played at Waco ISD Stadium on Saturday. The Cardinals averaged over 7 yards per carry while completing just 6 passes.
The Cardinals were down early after the Knights’ Jace Franklin scored on a QB keeper from 2 yards out on their opening drive. Fort Worth Christian would respond when Jack Roberson scored on a 1-yard run, his first of three touchdowns on the afternoon. Regents would get a field goal by Tyler Robert early in the 2nd quarter to take a 10-6 lead before the Cardinals would score twice before halftime.
Cade Garcia scored on a 2-yard run. On the next drive, Cade Cruzen intercepted a Franklin pass and scored on a 62-yard jaunt down the left sideline to give the Cardinals a 20-10 lead they would take into the break.
After halftime, Regents cut the Cardinals lead to 20-17 on a 34-yard scoring strike from Franklin to Cooper Christian. Fort Worth Christian responded with a drive capped by a 6-yard score from Roberson. The Cardinals would then score on a 52-yard run by Garcia at the 3:38 mark in the 3rd quarter. To start the 4th quarter, Roberson scored his third touchdown on a 52-yard run down the right side to extend their lead to 41-17.
While worn down, Regents did not give up. The Knights responded immediately, scoring on a 56-yard TD reception by Will Fisher. On the next Cardinal drive, the snap got away from QB Camp Comstock where Regents recovered on the 9-yard line. Franklin connected with Fisher again for a 9-yard TD pass to pull Regents within 41-30. Fort Worth Christian took possession with over 5 minutes remaining and ran out the clock to secure the regional championship.
Fort Worth Christian advances to face Grapevine Faith on Saturday at Pennington Field at 2:00. Faith defeated Parish Episcopal 46-40 in their regional championship.
