Fort Worth Christian 2016 Softball Preview
The reigning TAPPS 1-4A champion Fort Worth Christian softball team comes into 2016 returning six starters, decease including four 1st team all-district award winners. Manager Michelle Yarbrough Morgan returns for her ninth season and has compiled a 151-86 record at the helm of the Cardinals softball team.
Last season, advice the Cardinals were a perfect 10-0 in district play and reached the second round of playoffs before a loss to powerhouse Hyde Park. The Cardinals were so dominant in 2015 they defeated every district opponent at least once by way of mercy rule. The 2016 squad should be near the top of their district again this season with the biggest challenges coming from Midland Christian and Southwest Christian.
Leading the way for Fort Worth Christian will be senior pitcher Mycah Freudiger. The 2015 all-state award winner will have to throw to a new catcher this season with the graduation of Samantha Ortiz. The Cardinals return an intact infield in 2016. Juniors Kassidy Stephens and Kristina Dale and sophomore Moriah Ortiz are back after being selected as all-district winners. Dale also added offensive player of the year honors a year ago. In addition, expected to contribute is freshman Malin McCaskey.
The Cardinals will have to replace two outfielders with the graduation of Sarah Hall and Kristin Zorich, however this should not be a weakness with the track record of Morgan putting together a great lineup.
We expect the Cardinals to claim another district title in 2016 and a run to state is possible. If Freudiger remains healthy, the Cardinals will be a tough out come playoff time. To make the final four, Fort Worth Christian would most likely have to face Reicher or Hyde Park again and that would certainly be a challenge with the talent those teams return in 2016.
Fort Worth Christian kicks off their season on February 15 at Godley.
