Fort Worth Christian 2016 Baseball Preview
Last season, the Fort Worth Christian Cardinals lost just one district game to claim another district championship (13-1 district, 29-10-1 overall) and advanced to the state final four, falling to Hyde Park in the semifinals. To duplicate the success of 2015 squad will be difficult with the loss of some big time players. The biggest hole to fill will be the void left by Cal Smith, the reigning district offensive player of the year. Smith now plays at Panola College. Also gone this season is all-district catcher Conner Towle, now at York College, and Caleb Stone, now at Abilene Christian.
Leading the 5 returning starters is 2015 newcomer of the year, junior Colton Eager. When not pitching, Eager will lead the outfield for the Cardinals. Another strength for the Cardinals this season will be the left side of the infield. Returning at third base is the all-district senior, Isaac Schueller. At shortstop will be senior Blake Jameson, the district defensive player of the year in 2015.
To win district, Fort Worth Christian will need to grow up their young arms. Juniors Derek Vega and Clayton Cooper will help lead the way along with sophomore Ryan Snyder, who will also catch this season.
The Cardinals will know pretty quickly what kind of team they have in 2016 by kicking off the season with games against Liberty Christian and Nolan Catholic. Fort Worth Christian will also participate in the annual Private School Classic as well as tournaments at Prestonwood and Southwest High School.
Fort Worth Christian is led by manager Chase Roberston. After 2 years on staff as an assistant, Robertson enters his first season at the helm of the Cardinals.
