BRYAN (November 17, 2017) — The Fayetteville girls basketball team overcame a halftime deficit and held the St. Joseph Lady Eagles to just three points in the second half en route to a 22-19 win on Friday evening.

Both teams struggled to find the basket in the contest, but each team’s best players carried the weight right down to the wire. Fayetteville’s Amber Canik finished with 16 points, nine of which came after the break where she connected on 4 of 7 free throws to seal the win for the Lady Lions.

Senior Faith Starnes of St. Joseph scored eight of her 11 points in the first half and looked to be on her way to another stellar effort but was held to just three points in the second half on one of four shooting.

The Lady Lions scored just two points in the second quarter before giving up eight straight to the Lady Eagles when they roared back with stellar defense to allow just one field goal in the second half, forcing seven turnovers in the half.

St. Joseph had their opportunities to get back in the game in the 4th quarter but missed four straight field goals in the last two minutes and their last six field goals overall.

Fayetteville is 1-0 on the season while St. Joseph falls to 1-1 after a season opening win over Calvert on Tuesday. The Lady Lions will next face off against Aggieland Home School while St. Joseph will face Brazos Christian on Monday.
