Emery Weiner Jaguars 2016 Baseball Preview
Coming off of a 2015 season that saw the Jaguars finish 1 game above .500, Manager Adrian Adams hopes 2016 is the year Emery gets into the playoffs. Adams has good reason for being optimistic about this season. The Jaguars did not have a senior on last year’s squad and return the entire stating lineup. The Jags were just a few runs away from a playoff spot a year ago and with the experience gained, Emery should make their first playoff appearance in school history.
One of the strengths for Emery will be their starting pitching. Junior Evan Sack, the wins leader from a year ago, returns as does staff ace junior Jacob Grzebinski. Sack had a no-hitter in 2015 for one of his team-high 5 wins. Grzebinski, a lefty that tops out around 87 mph, showed dominance at times in 2015 and should increase his win total after working on some pitches to compliment the fastball. Look for the third starter to be crafty lefty, Joe Sondock.
Honorable mention all-district sophomore Coby Lowenstein returns at catcher. Juniors Sack (3B) and Michael Ran (SS) anchor the left side of the infield with David Kleban at first and senior Collin Hecht expected to play at second.
The outfield will be led by senior speedster Jake Meltzer in center. Grzebinski and Sondock will start in the outfield when not on the mound and 2nd team all-district award winner DH Ryan Tiras will also see playing time. Others expected to play are Jordan Hudson and Myles Henson.
Expectations are high for the 2016 team that returns everyone. Coach Adams on his squad: “This season we look to be more seasoned and ready to challenge the top teams in the district for a playoff spot.” The top teams are expected to be Second Baptist, led by first year coach Lance Berkman, Cypress Christian, Northland Christian, and Lutheran South.
Emery Weiner kicks off their season at home versus Rosehill Christian on February 9th.
