The 2016 Covenant Christian baseball squad is coming off a 2015 season that saw the Cougars finish in a tie for 4th (Pantego) in TAPPS 1-4A. Manager Rusty Beam returns for his fifth season at Covenant after successful stints at Southwest Christian and Fort Worth Christian. Beam is no stranger to winning and hopes his Cougar team can make a run at state this season. Beam is a 2-time coach of the year winner (FW Star-Telegram) and has won 3 three state titles, all at Southwest Christian (1999, 2002, 2003).

Beam’s optimism for 2016 is warranted as the Cougars return 7 everyday players from a year ago. None are probably more crucial to Cougar success than the probable opening day battery: seniors Alex Griggs, a Baylor commit, and Trey Roach, a commit to the University of Dallas. Griggs finished 2015 with a 2.96 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 54 innings. Roach returns to give the Cougars senior leadership behind the plate. Also catching will be the multi-purpose sophomore Wes Alvarez. He will be the Cougars’ designated hitter and see time at first base.

Coach Beam hopes he can get a boost from his 2016 newcomers. Sophomore shortstop/centerfielder David Van Vooren will see his first varsity action after missing 2015 due to injury. Freshman Mason Roach looks to be a solid left-handed option on the mound as does freshman Luke Roden in the outfield.

The Cougars have the makings of a team capable of reaching the state final four if the offense can produce against the state’s top pitching. Beam say he has a “very balanced team with a lot of young talent to go with a big senior right-handed pitcher”. We expect Covenant to compete for a district title in 2016 and be a tough out in the playoffs.

The Cougars will scrimmage Tyler All Saints on January 30th and open the season on February 8th versus Frisco Legacy Christian.
