BKB: TWCA grounds Frassati, 85-57

Jimmy John’s is sure to sponsor Tanner Field’s Warrior basketball team after their 85-57 win Thursday night over Spring Frassati Catholic, right?

The Woodlands Christian Academy‘s 28-point explosion in the second period, which sent them in to the halftime locker room with a 27-point advantage, was the closest thing to the sandwich maker “freaky fast” that’s been seen in quite some time.

The table was set, though, in the first period of play when the teams combined for nine three pointers and 47 points.

Frassati tried its own “Falcon Fast” version for the first half of the first period, where it had tied the score at 6-all and 8-all and allowed the Warriors to get up by two, 14-12, but then the Warriors went on an 11-point run keyed by treys from Bakari Lastrap, Luke Mansfield and Evan Fershtman and punctuated by a Tucker Nooe slam that left TWCA up 25-12.

However, the Falcons got three point shots from Jacob Morgan and Patrick Jannes and a Grant Guidry bucket to close the gap to seven, 27-20, at the end of the first period.

Six different players scored in the second period for TWCA as Lastrap pumped in nine of his halftime-leading 14 points. He would end the night with 23 points.

The Warriors also got runs of nine and ten points, respectively, as part of a 19-2 run to close the first half, most of which came off of a smothering defensive effort by the Warriors.

At halftime, The Woodlands Christian Academy had nine players who had scored. Nearly three minutes into the third period, Field started to make roster adjustments, but four of the five players who ended the game in double figures got there in the third, including Emanuel Jones, who came off the bench to spell Nooe to get 10 points on the evening.

Austin Benigni got 15 points for the Warriors, followed by Chanse Perkins’ 12 and Nooe’s 10.

Spring Frassati put three players into double figures with Matthew Jannes leading the way with 16 points. Morgan scored 14 points on the strength of four three pointers while Guidry added another 11 points.

Guidry’s two-point basket near the close of the third quarter gave him 1,000 points for his Falcons high school career.

Frassati fell to 2-1 while The Woodlands Christian Academy travels on Friday to Wichita Falls, Texas to face Lawton Christian Academy, coached by one of TAPPS’ all-time greats, Chad Wilkerson, who played at Grand Prairie Shady Grove Christian Academy and then for Oral Roberts University.
