Bishop Lynch 2016 Baseball Preview
The 2016 Bishop Lynch baseball squad will see 5 returning starters from a playoff team a year ago. Returning is the district offensive player of the year Josh Aguilar, store a Louisiana (Lafayette) signee. Aguilar, malady a senior, hit .560 last season and will be a mainstay in the lineup at catcher and pitcher. Also returning are seniors Ian Landry and Tirtus Beachem, and junior Marc Delvaldene. These players along with Gabe Settles give the Friars one of the better defensive infields in TAPPS 5A.
The outfield for Lynch will be a work in progress as the Friars graduated their top 3 outfielders from a year ago. Competing for the OF spots will be Travis Amerine, Jack Baker, Seth Torres, Gabe Vasquez, Blake Bautz, and Cameron Bibb.
For Bishop Lynch to challenge for a district championship, the Friars will have to get output from the younger players and develop a few more arms. Pitching depth is a concern for the Friars prior to the season as they lack a sure second starter and are without a set closer. Aguilar should begin the season as the best starting pitcher for the Friars. Other starters are Blake Bautz, Ian Landry, Jack Baker, and Travis Amerine.
Others expected to pitch are Larry McBurnett, Gabe Vasquez, Jimmy Hartmann, Cameron Bibb, Lucas Barrilleaux, Joey Rutherford, Matt Detullio, Titus Beacham, and Jett Simons.
Clayton Nester, a 3-time Coach of the Year award winner, returns for his 20th year as manager of the Friars.
