Temple Christian enters the 2016 season hoping to make a run at state as they return 14 starters (8 offense, 6 defense) from a team that made the playoffs last season. The Eagles were 7-4 in 2015 and went 5-2 in district play before ending their season in a opening-round playoff loss to Dallas First Baptist. Head coach Steve Hohulin returns for his fourth season at the TCS where he has compiled a 28-8 record. Overall, Hohulin has won 162 games in his career, most of which came during his 17 seasons at Pantego Christian Academy.
In 2016, Hohulin will have a chance to face off against his former team. Realignment has Pantego returning to Division III and is included in the same district as the Eagles. Grace Prep and Coram Deo also joined the district after playing in Division II last season. TCS will play district games a lot closer to home after spending the last two seasons in a district that included teams from Lubbock and Amarillo.
With so many starters returning for the Eagles, Hohulin believes his team will be one of the top teams in the district. If his squad can stay healthy, TCS is poised to take the district title. The Eagles will be strong on the lines and fast at the skill positions. Quarterback Avery Childs returns after accounting for 18 touchdowns a year ago as does running back Jordan Johnson, who scored 21 touchdowns on 6.6 yards per carry. Paving the way for these standouts is first team all-district lineman Demetrius Rowser.
Defensively, TCS will be looking to fill the void at defensive end left by Jarod Erwin. The all-state selection will be playing for the recently reinstated program at Texas Wesleyan, led by former Nolan Catholic coach Joe Prud’homme. Anchoring the defensive line will be Rowser while junior Thomas Frazor returns and will lead the linebacker crew. One concern Hohulin has is finding someone to step up and lead in the secondary, where graduation hit the hardest.
Temple Christian kicks off the 2016 campaign on the road against HSAA and will play their first home game on September 9th versus Trinity Christian (Willow Park). District play opens October 6th against Pantego Christian.
